The far-right members of the Republican Party of the United States have recently launched numerous fronts of attack against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) and the disturbing story is spreading fast especially among young immigrants’ groups and communities all around the country.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program whose primary objective is to provide undocumented young people who meet their criteria an absolution from being deported by providing them with a social security number, and the much coveted opportunity to work in the United States at least for a renewable period of two years. The DACA program has also made arrangements with several other states where these individuals can be allowed to acquire driver’s licenses and also access in-state-tuition fees.
Just the other day it was reported that the Attorney General of the state of Texas Mr. Ken Paxton publicized a letter written to the White House requesting them to repeal the DACA program by 5th of September. The letter does not leave it there but goes a step further to threaten legal action if the demands captured in the said letter are not met. However, Ken and group do not intend to halt DACA’s operations at once, they are proposing some sort of a phase-out where they expect DACA to at first stop considering new applications then later terminate further renewals. This far nine attorney generals and a governor of one of the Republican-leaning states have already signed against their names on the letter.
Recently, some members of the Hispanic Caucus held a closed-door meeting with John Kelly, the Secretary of Homeland Security. Mr. Kelly acknowledged that more than 800,000 people’s livelihoods and those of their loved ones could be at risk by virtue of their association with the DACA program. He went ahead to reveal that the already ongoing legal proceedings challenging the DACA program are one of the reasons for his coming out.
The DACA program has now been operational for five years and has produced tangible benefits to the individuals on the program itself and the United States at large. For instance, more than ninety percent of DACA beneficiaries either work or study or even do both in the country resulting millions of dollars contributed to colleges and universities around the country.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has offered to help in the fight to save DACA and the realization of a DREAM Act legislation.
Despite the apparent benefits that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals has brought in the United States, the extremists of GOP are starting attacks against the program. Ken Paxton, the Attorney General of Texas, drafted a letter asking the Trump administration to revoke the program. The letter signed by nine attorneys and the red states’ governor stated that if they do not meet their demand, they will take legal action. However, they do not expect the cancellation of the DACA program to be at once. Instead, the Trump administration should not accept new candidates and not make any renewals.
This move is putting a lot of fear to the beneficiaries of the DACA program. In its fifth year, the program has more than eight hundred members who fear the termination of their protection. John Kelly, the Secretary of Homeland Security, held a closed meeting with the members of the Hispanic Caucus to discuss the issue. The secretary stated the legal cases that are already a challenge to the program. He also recognized the benefit the program has on the economy. The beneficiary of the DACA program either work or study or do both and the income pay for their studies. For the years the program has been on operation, the members’ earnings have increased and paid more taxes. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund promised to give support, guidance, and information in the fight for DACA and finding a lasting solution to the problem.
Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is a fund founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin to fund organizations that are fighting for human, civil and migrant rights. Michael and Jim directed the settlement they received from the lawsuit against the County Sheriff to help fight for rights. The three million seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars will make a big difference in fighting for a good cause.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is a relief from deportation for undocumented youths. These youth, however, should meet specific prerequisites to qualify for the relief that is renewable in two years. They are also offered a social security number and given chances to work in the United States. The DACA program beneficiaries can also acquire in-state-tuition fees and driver’s license. The US recognizes individuals who came before their sixteenth birthday as eligible immigrants hence the need to protect them. A person is required to make sure they meet all the qualifications and then apply to be part of the program.
